Meet the Teacher

Thursday, September 21 is David Thompson School’s Meet the Teacher Night! Come meet teachers, enjoy a hot dog, visit the school, and get to know school council members. This event is an opportunity to see where children learn, meet teachers, and learn about D2L, homework expectations and classroom procedures!

  • 5:00 - 6:30 Hotdogs available in the atrium. To reduce our environmental footprint, we ask attendees to bring their own filled, reusable water bottle.
  • 5:30 - 7:30 Meet your child’s teachers, visit the learning commons, see the new outdoor learning space, shop the book fair, meet members of the school council.

School Council and Parent Society Meetings

The first school council and parent society meetings will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, beginning at 6:00 pm. Please note the new time. These meetings will be held in person at David Thompson School in the learning commons. We hope to see you there.

Band Parent Society Annual General Meeting + Band Parent Information Night

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the David Thompson School Band Parents Society (DTSBPS), and ‘Band Parent Information Night’ will be held concurrently on Tuesday, September 19th, from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Learning Commons at David Thompson School. The DTSBPS subsidizes band trips, clinics, performances, and activities by providing fundraising opportunities for students and their parents/guardians. Whether you would like to get involved or contribute as a ‘parent at large’, we strongly encourage all band parents/guardians to attend the AGM. The DTSBPS is of significant importance for providing affordable enrichment opportunities to band students at David Thompson School. In addition, Mr. McClary will be providing an overview of the proposed band trips, performances, clinics, and other activities for the 2023/24 school year. Mr. McClary will also be available to answer any questions or concerns regarding instrument rentals, trips, performances, fundraising, and band activities for the school year. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mr. McClary. Thank you for your ongoing support of student participation in band at David Thompson School.

Reminder: New Electronic Use Policy - Away for the Day

David Thompson School supports students with our new electronic use policy by asking students to put their devices (cell phones and smart watches) “away for the day”. Students will continue to have access to their device during lunch and recess break but are asked to put them away in their locker during instructional time. Research shows that kids and teens do better with phones away during school hours. When supported with putting their phones away, students are more engaged socially and academically and students are supported in developing a sense of community.

As this policy is new students will have reminders to adjust to this policy.

If you need to contact your child during instructional time, please contact the office and we will contact your child.

Computer Data Storage

To maintain our data integrity here at DTS, it is strongly encouraged that all students that have a computer-based class (or use computers frequently) bring a USB thumb drive to backup any work completed.  As many machines fill up and have unexpected updates, their local hard drives may be re-imaged and any saved work becomes lost without notice.  1-2 GB drives are sufficient.  Please ensure that any device brought to school is well labeled in case of loss.

Physical Education Reminders

The Phys. Ed. team is excited to start off this school year getting active and healthy! We are sending a reminder home that students will need to change into gym strip and sneakers every day.

  • They will need athletic attire that is breathable and comfortable. In keeping with the school policy, we ask students to wear a Red t-shirt and Black Athletic Bottoms (shorts/ sweatpants/track pants).
  • If students are interested in school clothing, please contact the school for information about David Thompson gym strip. However, purchasing school clothing is NOT mandatory.
  • If you find that your student has outgrown their current gym strip and it will no longer be used, we appreciate if you would donate them back to the school.
  • Student safety is crucial for a successful and fun class, so a Running Shoe/Sneaker is needed to participate safely in class.

We appreciate your support from home and look forward to a great year!

Athletics:

As the school year begins, we jump right back into our athletic teams. Our Fall sports have changed this year, and we will begin the year with tryouts for Soccer and Basketball.

*Cross Country continues to be a team that anyone in Grades 6, 7, 8, & 9 can join, and tryouts will not occur.

- Students should arrive to tryouts dressed in athletic wear and appropriate footwear.

- Bring a water bottle

- Parents are responsible for morning drop-offs and after school pick up.

Information meetings for each team will be held at lunch next week. Any student who is considering a team or two, is invited to attend those meetings, so they are well informed about the process.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Busses drop off and pick up students in front of the school along Arbour Crescent. In addition, caregivers are reminded that the school parking lot is not to be used for student pick up. We have already seen near misses between cars and buses due to the narrow roadway. As such, parents are encouraged to use 5th Street SE, which is easier to access the community and safer for our students as well. If you before 7:40 am or arrive after 8:00 am, please drop off in front. Pay attention to traffic signs.
