“Our vision is to empower students to become caring, respectful, responsible and successful members of our community and to foster a sense of achievement, belonging and life-long learning.”
We are very pleased to welcome you to a new year at David Thompson School. We are extremely proud of the core academic and complementary courses as well as the athletics and fine arts activities we offer our students. Our goal is to continue to work together to provide a safe, caring, and respectful learning environment. Please take time to read through this School Handbook as it contains important information regarding school procedures and expectations.
Who Was David Thompson?
David Thompson, (1770 – 1857), was known as “The Mapmaker”. He was responsible for providing the first comprehensive geography of the Western Territories, which later became part of Canada in 1870. He charted the official boundary between Canada and the United States, from the St. Lawrence River to the Lake of the Woods. However, his greatest legacy is his explorations in Western Canada. He is a role model of exploration, both physical and intellectual, for the students who attend this school named in his honor.

School Development Plan
Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report
Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
