Grade 8 and 9 Eastern Canada Information Meeting
We are currently planning a student educational trip to Eastern Canada, which includes: Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. The dates for the trips are:
- Grade 9 Students - April 8th to 14th, 2024.
- Grade 8 Students April 29th to May 5th, 2024.
For the 2024-2025 school year, the Eastern Canada Trip will offered to grade 8 students, which means this is the only opportunity for current grade 8 students to participate in this trip.
We will be working with the service provider Prometour in the planning of both trips. If you are interested in your grade 8 or 9 child taking part in this trip, there will be an information meeting for parents and their child on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:00pm in the Main Gym at David Thompson School. At the meeting, we will provide detailed information including the itinerary, purpose, safety measures, cost, etc. There will also be ample opportunity to answer your questions.
If you have any questions about this school off-site activity, please do not hesitate to contact me at vipoliquin@cbe.ab.ca.

OurSCHOOL Student Survey Administration
David Thompson School will be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. This anonymous survey is completely voluntary for all CBE students. Please find the details of the survey implementation below.
CBE’s Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes. Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.
Grades 4-12 students provide feedback on:
- sense of belonging
- positive relationships
- anxiety
- feeling safe at school
- life satisfaction
- general health
- orientation to well-being
- goal-oriented
- self-regulation
- cultural awareness of others
Additionally, Grades 6-12 students provide feedback on:
- depression
- self-esteem
- cultural awareness of self
Demographic questions are also asked on this survey for norming purposes. These are:
Grades 4-12 general
- age, gender, Indigenous status, immigrant status, home language.
Grades 6-12 specific
- grade repeater, reasons for changing schools, disability or medical conditions that limits participation in school activities or learning.
If you have questions or would like to request more information about David Thompson School’s upcoming implementation of the OurSCHOOL Student Survey, please contact Mr. Keuben cjkeuben@cbe.ab.ca.

Walking Trips
The CBE values the educational benefit of field trips. Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school.
Please be advised the process for trips within walking distance of the school has been simplified, excluding restricted activities, e.g. swimming. As parents/guardians, you will no longer need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the principal and may vary, depending on the age of the students.
Teachers will provide at least 48 hours’ notice when planning a trip to a local site. You will be notified about these trips by email, teacher blog or letter.
The following is a list of trips that are near the school that teachers may use to complement classroom learning:
- Acadia School (200m)
- Acadia Aquatic and Fitness Centre (700m)
- Lord Beaverbrook High School (700m)
- Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre (800m)
- Toppler Bowling (2 kms)
- Trico Centre (2.4kms)
- Francis Klein Center (450m)
- Carburn Park (3.9 kms)
As with any field trip, we want to inform you about some common hazards involved with walking trips to the above locations. Please note this list may not include all of
- the hazards for a given trip:
- Slips, trips and falls;
- Getting separated from the group;
- Street crossings;
- Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies
- Exposure to infectious diseases (eg. COVID-19 virus, SARS, MERS, influenza)
If you have any questions regarding field trips within walking distance of the school,
please contact Mr. Keuben or your child’s teacher.

Physical Education
A reminder that Phys. Ed. classes are outside for many of the modules. Students are encouraged to bring sweatpants, a jacket, gloves, and a hat, to stay warm outside. When the snow arrives, snow pants and boots will be very helpful so they can enjoy their class.

Basketball Spectators
Schools appreciate having spectators come out to cheer on sports teams. In order to ensure a positive environment for everyone, the following guidelines will be in place at every school:
Students who are visiting other schools (non-players) to cheer on teams, will not be admitted into the school, for any game(s), unless accompanied by a parent/guardian who stays for the duration of the time the student is in the building.
