Bonjour, Tiger Families!

As the fall equinox brings crisp mornings and golden leaves, we're settling into the rhythm of a new season together. It has been a full and joyful week at David Thompson, and we're grateful to share a few highlights.

It was wonderful to welcome so many of you to Meet the Teacher and our Tiger Dog BBQ. Thank you to the volunteers who made the evening and our Book Fair such a success a special thank you to our wonderful librarian Mealnie Lybertt. These moments of connection are at the heart of our culture of community, and it means so much to see families, students, and staff building those relationships early in the year.

Our athletes have been busy too. Our senior girls soccer team earned a win, and while the boys came up short this time, both teams are learning, growing, and having fun on the field. Basketball practices are underway, and our cross country runners gave their best at the Monday meet. We're proud of the effort, sportsmanship, and heart our Tigers bring every time they compete. Go Tigers!

Today our teachers are engaged in a professional learning which opened with some work on our TRC commitment, exploring the stories of this land and how Indigenous ways of knowing can be woven into task design across subject areas. Staff are also dedicating time to Individual Program Plan (IPP) planning and preparing for intervention days, so every student has the support they need to thrive. This work reflects our shared commitment to a culture of excellence and a culture of growth, where learning is central for students and staff alike.

Next Tuesday, September 29, our students will head to Fish Creek Park for a day of relational walking and talking circles. This experience connects to our school's TRC commitment to learn about the stories of the land where our school is located and to weave Indigenous stories and ways of knowing into our learning. Time on the land together helps build intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect, and gives students space to listen, share, and learn from one another. We invite everyone to wear orange that day as we honour Survivors and come together ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We are still looking for a few more volunteers to join us. If you're able to help, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher. A friendly reminder that permission forms are due to homeroom teachers this Monday, September 28. If your child has misplaced theirs, the form is linked below this message and can be printed and returned to their homeroom teacher. Forms brought on the day of the trip must be handed in before first class. Students without a signed form will not be able to attend and will remain at school for independent learning activities while their classmates are at Fish Creek.

Before and After-School Safety

With 750 students arriving and leaving at the same time, everyone needs to take extra care around buses, cars and pedestrians. Remind students riding bikes or scooters to please put their phones away, stay alert and follow traffic rules. After dismissal, please remind students to head home promptly and walk bikes and scooters off school property before riding. Students who want to stay on the school property should move to the back of the school away from the busses and pick up zones. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe.

Homework Support Club

Stuck on a challenging concept, need extra time to finish an assignment, or looking for a quiet place to make up a quiz? Homework Support Club is here to help!

Students are welcome to drop in every day during lunch from 11:30 a.m.–12:00 pm in room 20 for help with assignments, extra work time, or a quiet place to catch up.

Teachers and parents may recommend attendance, but students are also welcome to attend whenever they need extra support.

Dungeons and Dragons club

Our Dungeons and Dragons club will start October 1st after school. It runs from 2:30 to 4:00 in the art room. There will be a short meeting in the art room during the first half of lunch on September 23^rd to gauge interest, provide information, and answer questions. All are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Attention all students in Grade 7, 8 and 9s!

We are excited to announce the City of Calgary's Leadership program, LEAD, starting September 22nd. The LEAD program will be run Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the school year from 2:30pm – 4:30pm in the Aux Gym. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a positive impact in your community and have some fun!

In the LEAD program, youth will participate in various activities and games that focus on:

Leadership styles

Communication

Teamwork

Time management

Personal wellness

Problem solving

Leisure Education

Diversity

Conflict management

Participants will also volunteer in the community for 20hr. Upon the completion of the program the participants will receive a highly revised LEAD certificate.

Join the French Club!

We are excited to invite students to join Mme Feriel in Room 44 every Wednesday from 2:30–3:30 p.m. for a fun and engaging hour of French games, activities, culture, and conversation! The French Club is a wonderful opportunity for students to build confidence, practice their French, discover French-speaking cultures, make new friends, and most importantly, have fun while learning! We look forward to seeing our students there!

Band

All Band students should have their Music Instrument Rental Agreement by the end of this week. Students & Parents/Guardians must sign this form and return to Mr. McClary before taking their instrument home to practice.

Healthy Hunger

Healthy Hunger is back for the 2026/27 school year!

This parent council/volunteer run, and student-facilitated initiative offers affordable, nutritious snacks and lunch options to help keep our Tigers fueled through the school day.

It’s also a fundraising platform for David Thompson School, with funds going directly towards programs/activities/school equipment and materials.

Eastern Canada Trip, Parent Information Meeting

This year, we will once again be offering the Grade 8 Eastern Canada trip visiting Ottawa, Montréal and Quebec. This is an amazing opportunity for grade 8 students to immerse themselves in French culture and language, providing authentic opportunities for students to practice their French! If you are interested in the trip, there is a mandatory parent information session Tuesday October 6th at 6:00pm! We hope to see you there.

2027 Grade 9 SALTS Sailing Trip Parent Interest Meeting

We will be having an parent interest meeting for families and Grade 9

students interested in the 2027 SALTS sailing trip. Spring 2027 dates are May 3-7, 2027. The meeting will take place on Oct 6 at 7:00pm in the Learning Commons (directly after the Grade 8 Eastern Canada meeting).

About the Trip:
This is a 5 day (Monday to Friday) off-site activity where students live, eat, sleep, on a 70 ft tall ship while learning to sail in the Lower Gulf Islands near Victoria, BC. SALTS (Sail and Life Training Society) are the service provider. Students learn valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and grit, while also developing a greater understanding of the natural world as they explore the Gulf Islands – marine ecosystems, local Indigenous history, environmental issues and sustainability.
The approximate cost of this trip would be $2500. This fee covers the cost of flights, transportation, accommodations, and food during the trip. You can find more information on group sails at www.salts.ca.

StarGATE Mentorship Opportunity for Students

Our club is committed to supporting students in grades 5 to 12 by offering educational opportunities, including one-on-one tutoring and mentoring. Every year, through our partnership with the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, we’re thrilled to continue our mentorship initiative, connecting high school students with University of Calgary mentors. Our StarGATE Mentorship program is open to all grade 5-12 students, including those who are not part of the GATE program.

Program Highlights:

Explore University Life: Gain insights into campus life, academic pathways, and degree options.
Personalized Guidance: Monthly 30-minute one-on-one sessions with a University of Calgary mentor to ask questions, seek advice, and plan for post-secondary education.
Engaging Events: Participate in on-campus activities to connect with mentors and peers, build your network, and join a supportive learning community.

Over the past four years, mentees have shared that this program has been instrumental in helping them navigate their academic and career paths.

We would greatly appreciate it if you are able to inform your students and their parents about our club and encourage all interested students to apply and take advantage of this opportunity!
