Hello Tiger Families!

Well, that was a busy last few days of April! From the kids away in Eastern Canada, to bus evacuation, to Acadia buddies, Tiger Time, next year options picking, to the students away at City Hall and The Bird Sanctuary, what an incredible week. For all the work that has gone into all the activities and learning this week, a huge thank you to all of our organizers on staff and volunteers. And now we are heading right into May, and it is hard to believe we are here already. Next week we have the sailing crew off to SALTS and the week after that the campers off to Camp Chief Hector. With just a couple of short months to go we still have lots of learning to do and so many activites to engage in and celebrate.

As we move toward the finish line, we're grateful for every student who is choosing to work hard, show up, learn deeply, and support their classmates. Here is a studying tip to help all of our students getting ready for upcoming multiple choice exams. A powerful strategy to give to your child to help boost their performance is to have them annotate as they read. When tackling practice texts, have them actively mark the main idea in each paragraph, circle words they're not sure about, write questions in the margins, and underline evidence that supports key points. This active reading keeps the brain engaged, helps the memory and prepares the mind for the kinds of thinking multiple choice exams ask for. For math, apply the same thinking by having your student show all their work and explain their reasoning step-by-step, not just writing the answer. This helps students catch mistakes and understand the concepts more deeply.

Merci et bonne fin de semaine,

Warmly,

The David Thompson School Team

Happenings

Grade 9 Field Trip Poll

The Verdict at Vertigo Theatre show has been extended to give students a richer theatrical experience, which means bus dismissal would shift to approximately 2:30pm and return to school around 3pm that day. Before we finalize our plans, we want to hear from Grade 9 families. If you have a student in Grade 9 please take a moment to respond to this quick poll about transportation so we can ensure every student has a smooth path home that afternoon. Grade 9 June 3rd Matinee Transportation Poll.

Bottle Drive Fundraiser

David Thompson School is hosting a bottle drive to help fundraise for this year’s Grade 9 Farewell! Families are invited to support by dropping off their bottles at either the Chinook Bottle Depot or the South Pointe Bottle Depot. Simply let the depot know you are donating to “DT School Graduation Committee”, and the funds will go directly toward the farewell planning committee.

The bottle drive is running now until May 25—thank you for helping make this a memorable celebration for our Grade 9 students!

We have been approved for 6 new modular classrooms!

We are pleased to share that the Government of Alberta has approved 6 new modular classrooms for David Thompson. These classrooms will provide approximately 150 additional student spaces at the school.

The modular classrooms were approved in response to the Calgary Board of Education’s annual request through the Modular Classroom Program

Site assessments will begin shortly. During this time, you may notice CBE staff or contractors on the school grounds. We will share additional information once assessments and planning are complete, and an installation timeline has been confirmed.

Freezies Wanted!

The Grade 9 Farewell committee is asking for donations of jumbo freezies to sell as a fundraiser for our year end celebration. If you are able, please bring frozen freezies to the school by May 07. Thank you for your support!
