Hello Tiger Families,

February is a wonderful time to reflect on empathy, kindness, and the power of working together. When students are encouraged to use their voice, take risks, and lead with care, everyone benefits. It’s been a joy to watch our students take risks and dance alongside our artist in residence this week, and a treat to invite our Acadia grade 6s to join in the learning. Ajay shared an interactive and immersive cultural dance experience for our learners and huge gratitude to OLEP funding to help make that possible.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Open House this past week. It was a joyful evening and a powerful reminder of what makes David Thompson School such a special place. Our students did an incredible job showcasing their learning, leadership, and confidence as they welcomed the next group of Tigers. The pride they showed in their school and in themselves was inspiring, and we are excited to welcome new families to our community next year.

Our volleyball teams have been heading into games full of spirit, and we have seen some great games and team victories, and even more importantly, growth, resilience, and perseverance from every athlete. Thank you to families and coaches for the encouragement, sportsmanship, and support that make these experiences meaningful and positive for students.

One small reflection we invite families to do together is talk together. Oral language is at the heart of learning. Talking with your child about their day, asking curious questions, or having them teach you something they are learning builds confidence and deepens understanding. For students learning French, short daily moments of speaking, listening to music, reading, or sharing new words help move learning from understanding to confidence. Perfection is not the goal, participation and willingness to try matter most.

Sending some kindness your way as we head into the weekend. Merci de votre collaboration.

With gratitude,

The David Thompson School Team

Happenings

It's Francophonie week! C'est le temps pour la semaine de la francophonie!

The DTS semaine de la Francophonie is February 9-11th, 2026. Students celebrate French language and culture around the world all week, kicking off with an assembly. Students learned about the important connection of Maple syrup to Indigenous peoples in Nations located in what is now known as Québec and tasted la tire à la neige (maple taffy) On Monday, students will also receive a maple candy to celebrate. We look forward to celebrating our French language, heritage, and joy all week. Crêpes will be available on February 11th. Be sure to order yours via Healthy Hunger the end of day today. See Healthy Hunger for costs and options.

Grade 9 Transitions Mini Round Dance

Mark your calendars! On April 30, 2026, the CBE Indigenous Education Team invites Grade 9 Indigenous students, their families, and their school staff to be celebrated at the third annual CBE Grade 9 Transitions Mini Round Dance. This will be an evening to honour self-identified Indigenous students who are transitioning from Grade 9 to high school. Hosted at Ernest Manning High School, this event will include a bagged lunch feast, Indigenous artisans, special dances, an honour song, and a giveaway. All CBE students, families, and staff are invited to attend.

Dungeons & Dragons Club is Back!

The D&D Club kicked off again this Thursday. We meet weekly from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. We are actively looking for new members to join our ranks! D&D is a great way to build social skills, creativity, and teamwork in a fun, low-pressure environment. If you've ever wanted to try tabletop roleplaying games, now is the perfect time to start.

Yoga

Mme Kim will be starting Yoga classes again on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026. New students are welcome to join. Students meet in room 40 at 2:45 and start in the Drama room at 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Teaching focusses on foundational yoga and social-emotional learning through movement, with a different fun theme/focus each week. Students are welcome to bring their own mat, strap, and/or blocks. School-provided mats are also available. Students who participated in term one are welcome back. New students should return the required forms to room 40 before February 10.
