École David Thompson Weekly Update | A Community of Excellence
Weekly Update – Thursday September 11 | Message de la semaine – jeudi 11 septembre
"One language sets you in a corridor of life. Two languages open every door along the way," by Frank Smith.
David Thompson Newsletters are always available on our website!
Bonjour, Tiger Families,
Thank you for helping make the first week of school a great success! Last week, students focused on building connections with teachers and peers, establishing routines, and setting clear expectations. We also welcomed a guest speaker who used dance as a powerful metaphor for overcoming challenges and supporting others in their learning journey. Students began shaping the kind of positive, inclusive community they want to learn in.
As we move into Week Two, students are continuing to settle in and strengthen relationships. This week, we want to focus on responsibility and caring for our shared spaces.
A gentle reminder for students: please be mindful during lunch, especially when outside or off-campus. Cleaning up and avoiding littering helps protect our environment, supports community pride, and keeps wildlife safe from harmful plastics.
We continue to encourage all students to be kind, strive for excellence, and embrace the opportunities each day brings.
Thank you for your ongoing support at home.
Warmly,
The David Thompson School Team

Linguistic Duality Day!
A member of the Canadian Parents, has provided some resources to celebrate Linguistic Duality Day. One of the pillars of CPF is to engage Canadian youth in their language studies.
20 boxes of French activities from CPF (from the Linguistic Duality Network) have been donated to David Thompson school in celebration of Linguistic Duality Day. And the parent is going to reward the class who does the best job with the activities a pizza party! We so appreciate our partner parents. LDD which takes place this year on September 11th is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Canada’s two official languages, and to encourage students to appreciate and engage with both languages.
Support Our School Learning Commons! 📚✨
We’re excited to share that David Thompson School has once again been selected to participate in the Adopt a School fundraiser, in partnership with Indigo Crowfoot! — running from September 5 to October 5, 2025!
This initiative helps us raise valuable funds for our Learning Commons, supporting reading and educational resources for all our students. Every dollar donated goes directly to our school to enrich our collection of books and learning tools.

Grade 9 SALTS Information Session
We are excited to once again offer the Grade 9 SALTS (Sail And Life Training Society) sailing trip. This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance and grit, while also developing a greater understanding of the natural world as they explore the Lower Gulf Islands of BC – marine ecosystems, local Indigenous history, environmental issues and sustainability. The trip departs from Victoria BC's Upper Harbour May 4th and returns May 8th, 2026.
To learn more and ask any questions you might have, we invite you to an important introductory information meeting:
Date: Monday, September 22nd, 2025
Time: 6:00 pm
Location: École David Thompson School, Learning Commons
Scooters and skateboards
Students have been advised that we no longer have room to provide scooter/skateboard storage in the office. We are asking kindly that students bring a lock and do their best to secure their possessions on the outside bike racks. They are also welcome to use the indoor racks available in the Atrium. But they will need a bike lock in either situation. Please email kmmunroe@cbe.ab.ca if you need financial support to purchase a lock.
Attention all students in Grade 7, 8 and 9s!
We are excited to announce the City of Calgary's Leadership program, LEAD, starting September 22nd. Terry Fox Run 2025
|
David Thompson School is officially registered for the 2025 Terry Fox School Run, scheduled for September 19th.
We will continue to recognize Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope and will have Our Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 19th. This event supports vital cancer research while also building incredible school spirit for our students. Students are encouraged to show their spirit and wear their Red/Black DTS clothing on this day for our first Spirit Day of the year. They can also bring donations to their homeroom teacher all week in support of the Toonies for Terry campaign.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, and we’re thrilled to have your school join nearly 10,000 schools nationwide in celebrating his legacy. Your complimentary toolkit of promotional materials is on its way!

Dungeons and Dragons club
Dungeons and Dragons club will be starting up again next week on Thursday, September 18th after school, from 2:40 to 4:00. The location will be changing this year to the options wing - meet in the art room. New players of any age are welcome and no experience is necessary. Just come and we will provide a tutorial and create adventuring parties. Please email Ms. McMorran (mrmcmorran@cbe.ab.ca) if you have any questions!
Yoga Class at DTS
Students have the opportunity to attend a weekly yoga class on Tuesdays after school from October 7 - December 2, 2:45-3:45.
Sign-up will begin September 15th in Room 40. Space will be limited to 15 students. Another Yoga class will be over semester 2 as well.
The class will have a foundational approach to postures and breath. Students are encouraged to bring their own mat and blocks if available to them.
Here is a quick word from the instructor, Mme Kim, our Grade 6 Teacher at DTS:
I have been practicing yoga for many years and have benefitted from the calm, centering effect it has on the body and mind. I made a bucket list goal come true this past May when I completed my CYT-200 Yoga Instructor + Social-Emotional Learning Facilitator training. I look forward to sharing the benefits Yoga can bring to well-being and strategies to further develop mindfulness and stress management.
Reminder about litter
Hey everyone, we need your help to stop littering as soon as possible. Garbage is starting to show up again along the fence on Atlanta Crescent.
The biggest problem right now is Little Caesar’s pizza boxes. Some students are eating their pizza on the way to the mall and then leaving the boxes in the lanes or on the field. Please remember that this is a nice neighborhood, not a place to throw trash. This usually happens at the start of the year but gets better after a reminder. Let’s all work together to keep our area clean!
