Eclipse - Apr 8, 2024
On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m. The CBE has asked schools to refrain from allowing students exposure to this event. as well as away from windows to the outside between the hours of 11:50 a.m. – 1:50 p.m.
As such, students will be required to remain indoors for lunch on Monday, similar to our approach on extreme cold days. Please ensure your child comes with lunch on Monday. All students, including grades 7-9, will not be allowed to leave the school. In addition to keeping students indoors, we will be closing blinds and educating students on the dangers of observing the eclipse directly.
It is unsafe to look at the partial eclipse through unfiltered glasses, cameras, telescopes, binoculars or any other optical device. Curious students may not fully understand the danger of viewing the eclipse and the potential damage to their vision caused by viewing the harmful rays of the sun. Viewing a partial eclipse does not cause immediate pain which would typically cause the viewer to look away. Instead, permanent eye damage is sustained without any immediate signs, until it is too late.
Please note that the field trip to Canyon Meadows Cinemas and the excursion to Eastern Canada will proceed as scheduled. All students will be briefed on safety procedures and supervisors will actively monitor students to ensure compliance. Please contact the teacher in charge if you have any questions or wish to reconsider your child’s participation.
We have communicated expectations to students today and will continue to provide reminders. We also ask that you have a conversation with your child in preparation for Monday.
Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
Healthy Hunger Update
If you know your child will be absent for a Healthy Hunger, we ask families to please cancel online if enough notice is available or to make alternate plans for the lunch in case your child is absent and unable to pick up. Unfortunately, David Thompson School is not able to store lunches overnight. In case of undelivered lunches, they will be disposed of at the end of each day.
Summer CALM Grade 9’s
Due to very high interest in the Summer CALM program, we have decided to offer 3 more courses this summer using our satellite facility in Canmore, Alberta. This program will follow a similar program to the Summer CALM program run at the Outdoor Learning Centre, but the schedule and timing of activities will differ. We will send the final schedule for this course in June with our parent communication.
Please note: This course is NOT run from the Outdoor Learning Centre. This course is located in Canmore, Alberta and will be run out of our bunk houses located at Elizabeth Rummel School.
