École David Thompson Weekly Update | A Community of Excellence
Weekly Update – Friday, May 29 | Message de la semaine – vendredi le 29 mai
Quote: The earth laughs in flowers. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Hello Tiger Families!
This week, David Thompson was full of beautiful learning and laughter. From classrooms and school hallways to the gym to the art displays, our school community showed up in the most wonderful ways, and we could not be more grateful.
A heartfelt congratulations goes out to our Grade 6 and 9 students who completed this year's first round of PAT exams. Doing something hard, and doing it with care and focus, is something worth celebrating. We see you, Tigers.
Our Spring Showcase was truly something special. Students filled the school with creativity, from a stunning visual art display to the "A Wrinkle in Time" production and a Jazz Band performance that had everyone smiling. The Spring Band Concert, volunteer tea and feeder school tours rounded out what was a memorable stretch of school days.
We have a staffing update to share. Ms. Leavitt will be away for a period of time, and we are pleased to welcome Ms. Yoxall, who will be covering her Foods and Grade 6 classes through the end of June. We know she will be a wonderful addition to our community, and we look forward to introducing her to students and families.
Family tip for rigorous learning at home: As our Grade 6 and 9 students head into the next round of assessments, and our Grade 7s and 8s start to prepare for finals week, one of the most powerful things families can do is encourage growth over grades. Try saying things like "That was a great strategy" or "I'm proud of how hard you worked" or "I noticed how you broke that into smaller parts." Research consistently shows that focusing on effort and process builds the kind of resilience and love of learning that lasts well beyond any test.
Merci et bonne fin de semaine,
Warmly,
The David Thompson School Team

Bus reminders
Together, we can ensure that students’ trips to and from school are safe and successful. Students are reminded to be at their bus stop and ready to board at least 5 minutes before the scheduled pull-away time. At the end of the day, students may only exit at their assigned stop unless prior arrangements have been made through a bus transfer form from the office. Bus transfer requests must be completed 30 minutes before the end of the school day. Last-minute changes cannot be accommodated as these procedures are in place to support student safety.
Families are asked to please also review safe bus expectations with your child, including:
- Remaining seated at all times with knees facing forward and behind the seat in front of them
- Refraining from eating on the bus
- Keeping conversations at a respectful, conversational volume
- Musical instruments, including recorders, are permitted on the bus only if there is adequate space, and all instruments must remain in their cases at all times and stored away.
The bus change form is available here.
Dungeons and Dragons Club
The final D&D club gathering will be next week on June 04 and we will celebrate withour year-end potluck. Bring food, eat, and adventure!
Band Update
Congratulations to both the Grade 8 & 9 Symphonic Band, and The Grade 7 Concert Band for receiving scores of excellent at the Alberta Band Association Festival. You worked hard all year, and your efforts have paid off! You have made our school community proud of your performances!
As the year comes to an end, please remember that band shirts need to be washed at home and returned to Mr. McClary before the end of the year. In addition, larger instruments that are home based now need to return to the school.
Summer instrument rental: If your child is interested in renting an instrument over the summer, please get in touch with Mr. McClary. Please keep an eye out for an upcoming communication from Mr. McClary in your email.
